A quick review of Laser Khet 2.0

Was in Cambridge today and saw a neat-looking game at the MIT bookstore – Laser Khet 2.0

It looked like a fun game all by itself, but also a great game for kids to learn a little bit about geometry. I tried it out with my younger son tonight.

here’s the unboxing:

Getting set up takes a few minutes, so we did that with the camera off. The instructions also take just a minute or two to read, but are pretty easy to follow (I think, any way!).

Here’s our first game. It shows some of the rules, the basic geometry ideas, some mistakes by total novices (!), and a little trap that my son fell into – a rare victory for dad!

Overall, I think this is a wonderful game. From the math point of view, I love the conversations that we got to have about rotations, and about following the laser beam as it was reflected by the mirrors. From the non-math point of view, the game has lots of fun strategy (and we probably haven’t even scratched the surface there).

Both my kids and the kids from the neighborhood were playing all afternoon. They were also trying to set up the longest mirror run that they could on the board 🙂

Really happy to have run across this game today!
